Tom Graham

Established in 1985, Calico Creek Pottery is hand made on Salt Spring Island by long time potter Tom Graham. Trained by Roger Kerslake and Alex Sorotschynski at the Georgian College Ceramics and Glass Program, which was established by Robin Hopper. Tom graduated from the Ceramics and Glass Program and continued his studies at the Banff Centre of Arts. In the early 80’s Tom apprenticed with Hillsdale Pottery, Woodside Pottery, Blue Mountain Pottery and Gordon Wales Pottery.

Tom’s mid-fire stoneware is thrown on a traditional treadle kick wheel made by the potter himself and then finished by hand. The ware is then fired in oxidation, reduction and atmosphere kilns and is easily recognized by its colour tone and whispered local legends of durability.

Influences: Hartley Woodside, Roger Kerslake, Bernard Leach, Michael Casson, Lucy Rie, Phil Rogers, Walter Keeler and traditional Korean ceramics.

“My goal is to make something that calls to you and continues to be of interest. I hope you enjoy using my pottery as much as I enjoy making it. ”
